Who Thinks Pete Davidson Is Funny

Pete Davidson: Alive from New York (2020) Poster

Not special worthy. Mostly awkward.

Pete Davidson is not a horrible comic, but this special is not a good one. I feel like he ate 3 grams of shrooms and was tripping the whole time. It would explain the goggles and pauses, and hard time he had getting through his stories. So many great comics waiting for a deal, and this is what comes out?

Funny guy being mostly not funny

I'm no stranger to dark / f'ed up humour and definitely doesn't offensive or off-putting in that regard, but its the sloppy delivery and awkward pauses that makes this really hard to get through. It's like he's high (and not the good kind) throughout the show and looses hes train of thought multiple times, he even starts a joke at one point then starts to explain something completely different and never circles back to finish the joke. And I feel bad cus this guy is usually funny and gets too much flak from haters

Every 5th Word was Um and Uh. Not very funny

I like Pete on SNL, but I can see why he says they only put him in small doses. He's not funny for 45 minutes. His delivery doesn't land. Every fifth word is "um" "uh" "like" "whatever". He also appears to have ADD or something because he'll begin telling the set up for a joke, get distracted and talk about something else, then maybe come back five minutes to the joke he set up, but without any payoff. I think the audience laughs at Pete the celebrity, not Pete the stand-up. If he wasn't famous, nobody would think he was funny.

Just stories and applause, not laughs

For example, weed. Everyone knows Doug Benson is quintessential "weed comic," but he's F'n hilarious. Pete just uses crowd pleasers like weed to get claps, not laughs.

Just stories. No wit or cleverness.

Misunderstood

Pete's style of comedy is very awkward, I find it very unfair that people are criticizing the special for being awkward. If you watch SNL Pete will occasionally join Collin Jost and Micheal Che on weekend update and deliver his awkward take on something and it's just funny. Pete easily replicated that to create something that I found to be quite enjoyable.

How can you call him a comedian?

I always thought comedians had to be funny... Pete is NOT funny. This special is more like a ted talk. I don't understand how anyone can find this funny. I want my time back! I'm a huge fan of dark humor, but this is not humor. I want someone to count how many times he says "like."

Boring boring boring

I'm 45 minutes in and I haven't laughed one iota. I'm amazed how this guy got a special at all. "Oh, you're on SNL. I guess you should get a Netflix Special". Just... no. No no no. This was unbearable. Sex jokes! Yay! So funny! Never been done before! Porn jokes! Yay! So funny! How does this stuff get green lit? I'm astonished. I wanted to like it, but I just didn't (so far, at least. I think I'll shut it off pretty soon). None of this is important, relevant or life-changing. It's some guy with tattoos onstage thinking he's funny. Why on earth is the audience laughing? Don't watch this. It's a mess

This guy is awkward and unlikeable

He's really funny and random. His humor style is great. Gets the laughs

The show was good! Very funny...especially the second half!!! I like his comedy style. He doesn't take himself too seriously, and he's hilarious. Some jokes may be above the comfort line for people, but stand up comedy is subjective and that's okay.

I watched it with my friends and we all really enjoyed it. Hope to see more of Pete on SNL too! Big up, Pete. Keep it up.

I Love Pete Davidson... But Like...

And so I was like 'am I fired' and Lorne was like 'no' and I was like 'why not?' and Lorne was like 'I don't know' and I was like 'cool' and he was like 'Yeah And I was like, and he was like, like, like, like, like... His earlier special was great. And this one is really good too but MAN Americans all speak like Kardashians and it's almost impossible to get through.

If you like dark humor and can take a joke, you'll enjoy his show!

It's definitely not a 5.6 show, as someone else said it's maybe a 7-8. I wouId even put it in the 6.5-7 range. I don't believe it deserves such a low rating. If you're familiar with Pete's comedy, he's dark and unconventional. He even said in the beginning some of his jokes would split the audience, he's always been that way. So, if you can handle his genre of comedy, I recommend his show and it wouldn't be a waste of your time.

Not awful, but his delivery and stage presence needs a little work

This was just a bit disappointing. Some of the jokes land, and while I was never exactly frustrated or angry, I did occasionally feel a bit bored by the jokes that didn't land so well.

As a performer Davidson fares a little better than the quality of his jokes, but he's not quite there 100% either. Occasionally he looked a little awkward and nervous, and his delivery faltered whenever a joke didn't land. His attempts to justify or make fun of the less successful jokes were sometimes hard to watch.

With some more consistent content and a slightly more confident delivery, I could see him becoming a really good standup comedian in time. And at 27, he has plenty of time to develop and grow in those departments, so I will remain hopeful.

Its a 7.5-8 stars show!

I rated this show 10 stars only because its getting so much hate from all Ariana's fans. Its a good show, a solid 7.5-8. Dont be fooled by all the negative reviews it's really not that bad.

"Comedy"

This guy somehow continues to lower the bar in comedy every day, seemingly just by waking up in the morning. From calling chevy chase (a co-creator of SNL) unfunny and racist just because he doesn't think SNL is funny anymore (which it isn't), to saying his own whiny bouts of angsty depression are more serious than Dan Crenshaw's ptsd that he suffers from being injured in war, to (in this special) pathetically going after Louis CK in a petty attempt to get public revenge for a very private issue between the two. Basically, Louis is one of the top 5 comedians of all time, and Pete was upset because Louis evidently doesn't think Pete is funny (shocker). When one of the greatest comedians of all time doesn't think you're funny, the stupid thing to do would be to publicly gossip about that person like a school girl, but that's exactly what Pete does. Pete Davidson is just not funny, and no, people aren't just saying that because they're haters. They say it because the guy is just not funny. He will eventually be known as little more than a symptom of SNL's irreversible decline. Sorry if he's your favorite comedian, but that just means you don't have a good sense of humor.

Painfully awkward

I am a Pete Davidson fan. He is a great storyteller. There were a few funny stories, but man was it hard to get through the awkward parts. It wasn't his best. It was all around awkward.

Not Funny

First of all, I don't watch too much SNL and when I do, I already thought Pete wasn't a funny guy. Nevertheless, since I read that this stand up had some A.Grande references, I gave it a try. I only watched the first 17 mins because i got bored to be honest, and after minute 13 I started to notice that he looks down to the floor ALL THE TIME. At times it seemed like he was reading the "lines" from the floor or something.

I hope that he paid netflix to have this aired and not the other way around.

Don't waste your time watching this.

Very Hit and Miss

If you can tolerate his awkwardness- which seems genuine and not staged, there are some truly hilarious moments. But not everything lands. Overall, this seems like a decent set from a rising stand-up who's getting a Netflix special because he's SNL-famous. But Pete seems to realize this too. Give this kid another 5-10 years and he'll be great.

Brilliant!

Without giving too much away, I will say this...the realism of his jokes are funny. His sense of humor is so relatable. I watched it twice. It's so remarkable how he can tell a story with so much amusement. You're like, no...he did not just say that. It's so funny and true, and we're all thinking it. Most people don't like to admit it. His delivery is brilliant!

Pete's standup is getting better

Warning: Spoilers

I agree that the first half is a little rough and the audience seems uncomfortable. But the second half is genuinely funny and the jokes hit their mark. His jokes about cutting certain parts of the special and adding in punchlines about it were funny. And he had jokes about Ariana Grande, which I always like. He isn't a bad comedian, he just has his crowd and specific fans. His style and humor isn't for everybody just like every comedian.

mildly amusing but intriguing enough to keep watching

There are no big punchlines or reliable rhythms to follow but that is what made this special so watchable for me.

It feels like a stream of consciousness in front of a crowd and the awkwardness of that is precisely what makes the atmosphere electric. Because it is not perfectly pitched you feel like you're actually kind of getting to know him as a person to a certain extent.

I enjoyed hearing him talk about Staten Island and sharing his encounters within the standup community. For me it wasn't pure comedy, it was an insight into another culture and his observations of life just happen to be mildly amusing but also intriguing.

Deliciously uncomfortable

Pete Davidson - strangely attractive and undeniably odd.

This stand-up comedy special will make you feel uncomfortable as he talks about his life experience. At the same time you will be pulled into the Pete Davidson vortex and laugh along with him even though he has struggled with emotional pain and self doubt.

His future does not look bright - in my opinion. But this show is a gift for everyone.

Humanizing

I laughed or at least chuckled for most of the show. Fair warning, depending on how broad your sense of humor is, some jokes may upset you. It wasn't the best stand up but what he did really well is tell his side of the story. It felt real, honest and sincere.

Please! keep in mind folks

Response to many of the comments: I would appreciate it if people would remember he struggles with anxiety and has really bad stage fright. As a pianist who struggles with the same, I recognize the signs and was all I could see <3

Overly sensitive Ariana fans shouldn't review

I enjoyed this. I think Pete's delivery and timing are good, facial expressions on point and I really enjoyed his retelling of events in his life. He does say uhh and like a lot but he's clearly nervous and obviously has some heavy issues which I think they make him real and likeable. He's obviously not a super polished performer but a real guy with a sad and rough history who is just trying to make people laugh. Rooting for you Pete!

He can do better

Pete Davidson has a lot of potential as a young comedian with this much popularity so early in his career. The only problem is his self-esteem and current outlook on life. He could accept every opportunity as a chance to make the best of his career but instead it seems he constantly questions "why me?", "how am I still on SNL" , "how did I make it this far?"... etc. And I know this is meant to be "dark humor" but there's a difference between a comedian who perfects their craft and delivers self-deprecating jokes in an entertaining way (like Louis CK and Tom Segura) and then you have someone who spews out whatever is going on in their head in hopes that people will find the rant/pity party even mildly amusing. You are what you think Pete and I truly hope you get the help you need to break through these mental blocks and show your full talent
